Welcome to my blog on Chinese foreign aid.
It's part of my dissertation project and shall accompany me on my explorations in the next years.
After graduating in Sinology at University of Heidelberg I spent several years working for the German Development Cooperation in Beijing, and just recently returned to my alma mater to pursue the exciting and challenging project of writing a PhD.
Approaching the topic trough the lens of a sinologist and a development practitioner I try to follow up on the recent reform dynamics within the Chinese foreign aid system, looking at the questions: How is China reacting to the Western critique (and why at all)? How, by whom, and with which contents is the reform debate withing the Chinese system conducted? What are the debated reform options and (how) can they be attributed to China's various national role conceptions? How is the learning process in interaction with other (Western) actors taking place? How are core relevant development discourse concepts understood in China: development, aid, cooperation, responsibility, responsible stakeholder? What is (then) China identity as a ‘donor’? And, finally, what are the implications for China’s socialization in international aid system?
A firm believer in open access, my intention is to share with the non-Chinese speaking development research community all things relevant I come upon regarding the reform of China's foreign aid system.
This project is just starting, so I'm grateful for any constructive feedback ob the blog, its contents and am always ready to exchange ideas.
